Saturday Market Newsletter July 26, 2025
Okra-A Cherished Southern Delight
We love highlighting fresh produce from our farm vendors at the Saturday Market. This week, it's okra's turn to be in the spotlight. Okra, Hibiscus esculentus, is packed with vitamins and minerals and people either love it or avoid it. There must be a lot of okra fans at the market since vendors sell out every week. You can get okra from all our produce vendors.
And, if you like heirloom vegetables, try “Aunt Hettie’s Red” okra, said to be a Tennessee heirloom that was grown and saved by Hettie Jane Tidwell [1918-1998] and shared with family members. Its vibrant burgundy color makes it a standout and the flavor is delicious. Aunt Hettie's red okra is available at Belle Fleur Farms. Try some okra and other fresh produce this Saturday from 8-noon.
Check out our other product features in this week's newsletter, with a focus on hand-crafted soaps at the market.

Green Garden Soap & Bath: Soaps and More
"At Green Garden Soap & Bath we have been making soaps for the past 15 years. Our soaps are made from scratch by me in Smyrna, TN, with a tried and true, personally developed formula that is packed with skin loving oils, butters, and additives. We customize each bar by adding ingredients like goat milk and yogurt (for the abundance of lactic acid), honey, oatmeal, pine tar, calamine, rice milk, sea salt, Pink Himalayan salt, and various botanical extracts to create a more beneficial bar of soap that not only cleanses but nourishes and revitalizes the skin. We grow some of our botanicals ourselves and we source only organic and sustainable ingredients from reputable suppliers in the soap making and food space. We are open to customization for those with specific needs. Over the years, we have acquired a number of repeat customers who come back for their ‘special’ soap. This makes it difficult for us to discontinue a soap, so we now carry over 50 different variety of soaps – scented and non-scented. We love our customers and what they have to say about our soap!" Shanti
Wagyu Farms: Tallow Soap
A newcomer to soap making, Regina at Wagyu Farms, has started making beef tallow soap. This is her story. "For centuries, tallow has been a trusted ingredient in not only cooking, but traditional soap making. Rendered from the fat we save in processing, the tallow is then mixed with lye and essential oils and formed into a bar that is long‑lasting and wonderfully conditioning.
What makes tallow so unique is its composition—it closely resembles the natural oils found in human skin. This similarity allows tallow soap to work in harmony with the skin’s own biology, providing a gentle yet effective cleanse without stripping away essential moisture.
Loaded with skin‑loving vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with fatty acids that feed and protect the skin, a bar of tallow soap doesn’t just cleanse—it deeply moisturizes and helps maintain a strong, healthy skin barrier. A traditional ingredient with modern appeal, tallow soap continues to earn its place as a time‑honored choice for natural skincare."
