The first H.G Hill Company opened on the square in 1915. This newspaper article is from November 4th,1927 that states there are 2 H G Hill's stores in Murfreesboro. The first opened on the square "about 12 years ago" which would put that opening in the year 1915. It also states that the other store at Vine and Maple opened around 3 years earlier or 1924. Which is where our Stood The test of time recipient comes in. 
According to C. B. Arnette's, Mink Slide to Main Street, J. K. "Cap" Clayton was the owner of 103 N. Maple Street on the west side of the square. He closed his shoe store in the 1920s and leased the space to the H. G. Hill Store, which was headquartered in Nashville. Frank Clardy was one of the first managers of the store. H. G. Hills remained in this location until 1953 [sic 1952], when the business moved to its new supermarket building in the 300 block of East Main street.

Mrs. Gage Chapman sold her beautiful home at 323 E. Main Street that was razed for the building of the new H. G. Hill Store.

Jr. Bean worked at HG Hills for 30-plus years, even when it was on the square. Bean bought the company from Mr. Hill in 1982 and changed the name to Foodtown. In 1988, Foodtown turned into Jrs Foodland. This clip is from 10/23/1988

Andy and Susan Haynes, purchased the business in 2010. In 2021, St. Paul's Episcopal bought the building and the site.
