A special attraction for a fall farmer's market is the selection of fresh mums available. They started coming in last week, and this week we will have mums available from Triple A Farms and Southland Farms. You can't miss this show of fall colors, and with a little care, you can keep them looking good through the fall.

Our vendors have a number of varieties, colors, and sizes. For instant impact, select a plant in full flower. To extend the display, choose a plant with tight flower buds and less color showing.  With the right care, the buds will open up, making the flowers last longer.
Keep your mums in full sun for flowering and color. Don't neglect watering, especially if your mums remain in containers. Consider putting your mum pot inside a larger pot to cut down on drying. Don't let them wilt. Once a flowering fall mum is water-stressed, it turns off flowering. While it won't necessarily kill the plant, the flowering will not recover.
Don’t water the foliage, but direct water to the base of the plant and continue until water starts to flow from the bottom of the container. Wet leaves make it easy for fungal growth to set in. Snip off spent blooms and enjoy your fresh mums throughout the fall. 

We are celebrating "Christmas in October" at the Saturday Market, starting next week. If you are looking for unique holiday gifts, and a way to support market makers, growers, and artisans, then consider buying gifts this next month at the Saturday Market. Watch for gift idea suggestions from our vendors and even the Christmas Elf. The Saturday Market is open October 4, 11, 18, and 25--EVERY Saturday in October from 8-Noon. 

We always have MTSU students at the Saturday Market, but the MTSU Blue Raider shuttle is making it easier for them to shop at the market and explore downtown. The shuttle will transport students from campus to the public square every 30 minutes, from 9 - Noon.  Students can catch the bus behind the MTSU library in the parking area.  There is an MTSU scavenger hunt downtown designed for students to participate in for a chance to win prizes. The shuttle will run from September through October to give students an opportunity to enjoy the Murfreesboro downtown square and the Saturday Market. Drop off downtown is on Maple Street, across from the Saturday Market information tent.
