Get to know one of our Saturday Market volunteers!
Get to know Robby Howard in his own words...
"My passion for life is providing support, kindness, and a helping hand to those in need.
I volunteer to meet new people while simultaneously providing a needed service to organizations that I enjoy.
My biggest advice to anyone considering volunteering is to meet with someone who runs the events to get an idea of what to expect. I also recommend finding your place and being consistent. This helps you understand your role to better assist, as well as get to know the organization with which you volunteer. Also, the best thing about volunteering is the pride gained from being a part of something special in your community. People get to know your face and associate it with something they enjoy."
Why choose Main Street for volunteering?
"I chose Main Street Murfreesboro to volunteer with initially because of the Saturday Market. I lived in Arizona from 2016-2024 and frequently went to similar markets and the idea of getting to know the people and products has such a personal touch. This was made even better by getting to meet with Sarah, the Executive Director, and the warmth & positivity I felt in our initial meeting. It just felt right, and I am genuinely excited to be part of the events, using my free time to help this vital organization that connects people in a time where community and kindness needs more of the spotlight.
Here in Tennessee, I have also volunteered with Gallagher Guitars. I assisted with their music festival. I play guitar and they are a local handmade luthier company located just off the square. It was very enjoyable to be part of this event because they provided a free family-friendly day of music and fun.
I also work with "We Give" that helps children and families that are experiencing times of difficulty and permanent housing. "We Give" collects shoes for children in need, provides snacks for after school, and other wonderful acts of kindness for children that need it. They also raise money by having events which I always try to give my time."
What does Robby do when he isn't volunteering?
"I work in Mortgage Lending. I work with The Howard Group at CMG Home Loans. I work as part of a Team consisting of my mother & brother (which between the two have over 35 years of experience). I enjoy this line of work because it gives me the opportunity to work with families in the pursuit of “The American Dream”.
The process of homeownership can be overwhelming and to be able to walk people through it with a trusting hand, leading them in the direction that is best for them (even if it means going with a competitor).
I feel that I enjoy being an honest voice in an industry that needs that voice greatly. Then to be able to do it with the two most knowledgeable, honest and genuine people I know (Mom – Debbie Howard & Brother – Rusty Howard) is truly a blessing.
When I am not working...
I taught myself to play guitar when I was 29 years old. I am 40 now and love playing Jazz. I recently played at Just Love Coffee (East) and am scheduled to play at Brass Horn in August."
What inspires you every day to stay positive and keep going?
"My grandmother inspires me every day. I have a fun relationship with her. Starting during Covid, we try to talk once a week. In these short conversations I have been able to learn so much about her and her resilience. She is also my #1 fan because as I was learning guitar I would make her videos. That allowed me the confidence to eventually perform in public. And she has always been extremely supportive. It is nice to be able to say she is truly a friend as much as a grandmother. I want to make sure I say thank you to my dad & mom for all their support throughout the years. Also, my brother has been as good of a friend as one could hope. I have watched my sister-in-law achieve so much and it has helped to guide my life.
Finally, none of this would exist if it wasn’t for my best friend, my dog, Lady Bird. I couldn’t be luckier."
