It's been a fun year at Beckman's Prescription Shop

Beckman's Prescription Shop is celebrating its 50th Anniversary!

As Murfreesboro's oldest drug store, it's been great to highlight big moments in our history, stories from the past, and celebrate what continues to make our business successful through the years. Our pharmacy has always been built on strong relationships, with both our patients and our community. It's what we feel sets us a part from other pharmacies... we truly view our patients as family. Speaking of family, many of our patients have watched Keith grow up inside the pharmacy. As a child running around the store, to a kid doing homework at the front table after walking over from Central Middle School, to when he officially started working at the age of 16.    I also feel very blessed to have been a part of this pharmacy from a young age. As a junior in high school, I began to date a young man named Keith Beckman, whose parents happened to own a pharmacy downtown. They were in need of a clerk and someone to make deliveries to homebound patients, so I got my first real job at Beckman's Prescription Shop in the summer of 2001.

Fast Forward

Twenty-two years later, it is such a blessing to still be a part of this rich history of Beckman's Prescription Shop. Keith's parents, Milton and Sylvia Beckman, purchased The Prescription Shop (located in the basement of the old Polk Hotel on Main Street) from pharmacist James Garner in 1973. Eventually, the hotel was torn down in 1977 and Beckman's Prescription Shop moved to our current location at the corner of Spring and East College Street. In the decade that followed, Milton and Sylvia acquired the pharmacies Stickney and Griffis and Moudy Drugs on the downtown square. They kept the pharmacies open for a time, before consolidating all of them into our present day location. My father-in-law, Milton Beckman, was a pillar of kindness and service in the community. We are reminded of this daily with stories and sentiments from all those that loved him, before we lost him to a brain tumor in 2007. With the help of a determined staff, my mother-in-law, Sylvia Beckman, continued to keep the pharmacy running until Keith graduated from pharmacy school. Keith came back to learn the ropes of the family business and after some twists and turns in my pharmacy career, I ended up back here in 2018. Eventually, Keith and I officially completed the purchase of the pharmacy in 2021 and together we began a new chapter of Beckman's Prescription Shop.

The Legacy

Along with an amazing history and constant reminders of the legacy created before us, we are so blessed to now get to usher our own personalities and gifts into a new era here at the pharmacy. In the past 5 years, we have created a new website, new logo, refreshed our outdoor spaces, established a med sync program, and become one of Middle Tennessee's most well-known spots for vaccinations. We also pride ourselves on being a constant resource for other health care providers and enjoy our role as preceptors for pharmacy students from the University of Tennessee.     Even though we can attribute much of our success to strong relationships built on compassion and a lot of hard work, there really is no way to overstate how valuable the Downtown Murfreesboro community has been for our business. I'm not sure that Beckman's Prescription Shop would be as successful anywhere else in Middle Tennessee... or at least we certainly would never want to try. We feel like we can be ourselves downtown and we can take our time with our friends and neighbors.  We walk down to see Rollie at Holden's Hardware for a light bulb, pick up lunch at Simply Pure Sweets, drop a bank deposit off at Pinnacle, grab a gift across the street from M&J's, and the list just goes on and on. It is such a GIFT to be a part of this community!    There's been lots of changes in 50 years, changes within healthcare and changes within our town. But we are proud to still be here and providing the best care possible in Downtown Murfreesboro. It wouldn't be possible without the incredible people that we serve and our incredible staff.  With the support of all of you and this wonderful community, we hope to be here for another fifty!
